Keep the turnpike as it is

Keep the turnpike as it is

Get I am writing in regard to Gov. John Kasich’s attempt to privatize our Ohio Turnpike.

First of all, I would like to commend the Trumbull County commissioners for adopting a resolution opposing privatizing of our turnpike.

The Ohio Turnpike is one of the only state agencies that makes a profit every year. Two years ago the Ohio Turnpike made $26 million. In 2010 it took in $242 million. Once sold, our state will lose that income for a onetime deal by the governor.

The Ohio Turnpike has been the safest and best-conditioned roadway in the country. If it were privatized, many jobs could be lost. Ohio can’t afford to lose more jobs, especially when the Ohio Turnpike jobs have nothing to do with Ohio’s debt.

Retirement of the workers who have 15 years or more may have their retirements jeopardized.

Remember, the Ohio Turnpike is a separate entity, and has no reflection on the $8 billion debt. Anyone who cares about their fellow taxpayers should call or write their representatives and ask them to oppose privatizing of the Ohio Turnpike.

Look around for some clues

When I read the article “Population Plunge” it caused me to be concerned about the ability of Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams to lead.

He stated: “I’m trying to find a rational reason why there would be a decline. At this point, I’m unable to connect the dots to support or explain such a steep decline.” Does he not see what goes on in his city? He should talk to people in the surrounding communities who could give him a clue.
