Demjanjuk hospitalized; trial session called off

MUNICH (AP) — Judges say John Demjanjuk’s trial has been called off for the day after the 90-year-old defendant was hospitalized with an intestinal infection and low hemoglobin levels.

Ukrainian-born retired Ohio autoworker Demjanjuk is accused of 28,060 counts of accessory to murder on allegations he served as a guard at the Nazis’ Sobibor death camp. He rejects the charges, saying he never served as a guard in any Nazi camp.

Demjanjuk suffers from a number of medical problems, including chronically low hemoglobin levels, and has received several blood transfusions over the approximate 16 months of his trial. More than a dozen trial sessions have been canceled for medical reasons.

Judge Ralph Alt told the court today that it was not yet clear whether Demjanjuk would need another transfusion.
