Police: 2 Va. deputies still in critical condition


VANSANT, Va. (AP) — Virginia state police say two sheriff’s deputies are still in critical condition following a shootout at a rural salvage yard.

Deputies Erik Rasnake and Shane Charles were being treated at separate hospitals after being hit by gunfire from a high-powered rifle Sunday afternoon.

Two other Buchanan County deputies were killed when they arrived at the scene to help search for the gunman, who was later shot and killed by police.

State Police say deputies Cameron Justus and William Stiltner died at the scene. The suspected shooter, Randy Newberry, was killed by police.

The shootout occurred after police responded to a possible robbery at the salvage yard in Vansant.
