YOUNGSTOWN

The search is down to two for a new executive director for the Mahoning-Youngstown Community Action Partnership.

John Wilson, agency interim executive director, said he has completed researching references and doing more in-depth background reviews and plans to make his recommendation to the MYCAP search committee early this week.

Wilson, who said the finalists are from out of state, said he does not know when the board will take action on the recommendations.

MYCAP administers 11 programs in Mahoning County to help poor and disadvantaged people. Its budget in 2008 was about $15.6 million, virtually all of which came from state and federal grants.

Also, Wilson said, last Wednesday was the deadline for applications for the position of director of financial operations. He said the agency received 14 or 15 good applications, mostly from people in Northeast Ohio.

The advertisement for executive-director candidates asked for someone with 10 years of management experience, including five years at the executive level. The starting salary is $85,000 a year.

Wilson expects both positions to be filled by the end of the month.

Hiring of new executive leaders is the final step in MYCAP’s recovery from an Ohio Department of Development financial review that led to the firing of agency’s former director, Richard Roller III,

In November 2010, MYCAP’s board approved a three-month, $230,000 contract with Progress Resources Inc., of which Wilson is president. His firm is a Pennsylvania nonprofit training and technical- assistance organization that provides consulting services to community-action agencies nationwide.

The MYCAP board recently extended the original contract, which expired Jan. 31, and will pay Progress Resources an additional $110,000 through this month.

Wilson is part of a team of three full-time and two part-time people that has been restructuring MYCAP’s finances, policies and procedures and directing the search for new executive and financial directors for the agency.

“The Progress Resources goal is to ensure that proper systems and internal controls are in place and MYCAP is on sound fiscal footing,” Wilson added.
