Pittsburgh’s Petzel wins Michalojko Tournament

After starting with a full field of 144 from seven states, the 10th annual Mickey Michalojko Memorial Scratch bowling tournament whittled down to one: winner Jim Petzel of Pittsburgh.

Petzel captured the title and a guaranteed first prize of more than $2,000 by beating Artie Fink Jr. of Altoona on Feb. 27 at Colonial Lanes in New Castle, Pa.

Petzel started slowly, averaging just 208 for four qualifying games, but then posted a two-game finals total of 472, just two pins higher than Fink. Only 10 pins separated Petzel, Fink and Troy Monahan, also of Altoona, who was placed third. Mike Shady of Erie was fourth.

Joe Seminara’s Pizza Joe’s was the main sponsor of the event that, in conjunction with other businesses, raised more than $2,000 in scholarship money that will be distributed to area junior bowlers.
