When he became principal six years ago at West Elementary, Al Cervello launched a “Special Person’s Lunch.”

Before West kindergartners welcomed in their special people to eat on March 3, Cervello spoke to the parents, relatives, and role models who were invited to the event.

“I wish you could have seen your kindergartners this morning,” Cervello told the crowd. “The kids are so excited. It seems simple, but just coming to eat lunch with your kids is a very special event.”

West kindergartners were then welcomed to greet their special person and head to the lunch room for a meal of spaghetti and meatballs.

Jennifer Romeo ate lunch with her son, Oliver.

“He’s having a lot of fun,” Romeo said. “He loves to talk and show me off to his friends.”

Joel Cueras had a bit of trouble deciding on a special person to bring, but decided on his mom, Kristina.

“Joel said he wanted to bring both me and his dad, even though only one special person is allowed. But, his dad is having a surgery today, so I’m just being all-around supportive.”

Joel Cueras appreciated the new way to show his mom he cared.

“Usually, I show my mom she’s special by helping around the house and doing the dishes. But this is good, too,” he said.

Although the lunch was a fun excursion, Jessica Edmonds was glad her son, Brandon Lee, doesn’t need just a lunch to voice his appreciation.

“Brandon always makes me feel special. He tells me every day that he loves me and that I’m his best friend.”
