Lenten programs


Greater Austintown Ministerial Association: The association invites the community to join ecumenical worship services for Lent on six Sundays in March and April and ending with a Good Friday service April 22. Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wickliffe Christian Church, 3939 Potomac Ave., Austintown; 7 p.m. March 20 at Bethel Assembly of God Church, 3807 Mahoning Ave., Austintown; 7 p.m. March 27 at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, 45 Idlewood Road, Austintown; 7 p.m. April 3 at Emmanuel Community Church, 6512 Kirk Road, Canfield; 7 p.m. April 10 at Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2432 S. Raccoon Road, Austintown; 7 p.m. April 17 at Austintown Community Church, 242 S. Canfield-Niles Road; and noon April 22, Good Friday, at First United Methodist Church of West Austintown, 6749 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. Each host church will provide the format for the service, the music and refreshments after the service. For the April 17 service at Austintown Community Church, the music will be provided by Ecumenical Community Choir directed by Harold and Cheri Blackann.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 490 N. High Street, Cortland: A member of the Northern Trumbull County Lutheran Parish along with St. John Lutheran Church, 5734 Mahoning Ave. NW, Champion, will host a dinner and movie during Lent. Each Wednesday at 6 p.m., the church will provide a soup supper followed by the showing of a Hollywood movie based on Biblical events. “The Robe” will be next week.

St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown: The church plans a Tuesday Lenten speaker series with Mass at 5:30 p.m., simple supper at 6 and speaker at 6:45. Programs will be: March 22, “The Woman At the Well,” with Geri Jacquet, director of religious education at St. Charles Church in Boardman; March 29, “The Man Born Blind” with the Rev. Nick Shori, director of Pastoral Planning, Diocese of Youngstown; April 5, “The Raising of Lazarus” with Melinda K. Smith, certified spiritual director of Ignatian Spirituality Institute; and April 12, “Journey to Jerusalem” with Jim Merhaut, president of Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center. St. John’s Episcopal Church, 226 W. State St., Sharon, Pa.: Lenten meditation-recital series at noon Tuesday with carillon music followed by meditation and a recital with flutist Josie Kost. The event is free, and a light lunch will be served.

St. Pius X Church, 1401 Moncrest NW, Warren: Lenten Reflections will be offered April 8 beginning with Stations of the Cross at 6:30 p.m. in the church. A talk by guest speaker the Rev. Gerard Gonda, monk of St. Andrew Abbey in Cleveland, will follow. His topic is “What Happens When Good People Suffer.” Concluding the evening will be refreshments and fellowship in the social hall.
