Canfield speech and debate team is state runner-up in Toledo

The Canfield High School speech and debate team earned second place in Team Sweepstakes at the 2011 Ohio High School Speech League State Tournament at Toledo Whitmer last weekend.

Canfield team finished with 67 points, which was three points behind state champion Howland (70).

Canfield had a team-record eight entries with 12 students total recognized during the awards ceremony. Of the school’s 36 team members competing, 24 advanced to the elimination rounds.

Finishing second in Ohio for Canfield were Nathan Pecchia and Rosie Jo Neddy, duo interpretation; Tim Nesnidol, humorous interpretation; and Chloe Gebacz, impromptu.

Marisa McGrath finished third in impromptu and Arthur Brant and Maggie Watt were top four semifinalists. Placing fifth in Ohio were Mary Elizabeth Monda and Elise Szabo, duo interpretation and Gary Zamary, impromptu.

Jordan Teutsch and Sophia Piloll placed seventh in duo interpretation.

Teams finishing behind Canfield were Perry (60 points), Jackson (47), Oakwood (35), Mooney (30), University School (3), Louisville (27), Olmstead Falls (26) and Columbiana (24).
