2010 Census: Valley has lost 44,517 people

The Mahoning Valley’s population declined 7.5 percent from 2000 to last year, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

The total population of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties dropped from 594,746 in 2000 to 550,229 in July 2010, according to census estimates. These figures use administrative records such as births, deaths and migration.

The official numbers for counties, cities, villages and townships will be released today by the Census Bureau.

The estimates show Mahoning County lost 8.9 percent of its population. Mahoning, along with Cuyahoga, led Ohio counties with the largest percentage population declines over the decade.

Mahoning County’s population dropped from 257,555 in 2000 to 234,532 in July 2010, according to estimates. Mahoning went from the state’s 10th most populated county in 2000 to 11th, with Lake County moving ahead of it.

Trumbull County saw a 7.6-percent decline in its population, from 225,116 in 2000 to 208,119 in July 2010. Trumbull dropped from the 12th most populated county to 13th, with Warren County moving in front of it.

Columbiana County’s population declined 4 percent from 112,075 in 2000 to 107,578 in July 2010. Columbiana was the 22nd most populated county in 2000 and was 26th in July 2010.

Of Ohio’s 88 counties, 43 lost population.
