MLB Monday’s games
Indians 16, White Sox 16
GLENDALE, Ariz.
Cleveland manager Manny Acta felt sorry for the pitchers after Alex Rios of the White Sox and Luis Valbuena of the Indians each homered twice and drove in five runs as Cleveland and a Chicago split-squad played to a tie. The game was called after nine innings. Winds gusted up to 25 mph at times in a slugfest that included 21 runs and 22 hits through the first four innings. “Those first three innings were just excruciating because of the wind,” Acta said. Rios hit a two-run shot in the first and a three-run drive off Mitch Talbot in Chicago’s seven-run second, helping the White Sox to a 9-6 lead. Mark Teahen had two hits and three RBIs for Chicago, which finished with 19 hits. Stefan Gartrell had a two-run homer and Dayan Viciedo added three hits. Valbuena had a two-run homer in the second and a tying three-run shot in the eighth that made it 14-all. Nick Weglarz also hit a two-run homer for Cleveland. In addition to the 32 runs, the Indians and White Sox combined for 39 hits, 16 for extra bases, 10 walks, six errors and four wild pitches. The only scoreless inning was the fifth, when each team went down in order. Lucas Harrell was roughed up in his second spring appearance for the White Sox, allowing six runs and eight hits in 12/3 innings.
Rays 4, Pirates 2
BRADENTON, Fla.
David Price allowed one run and three hits in four innings in Tampa Bay’s first victory since beating the Pirates in its spring opener on Feb. 26. Matt Bush, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft and a converted shortstop, worked the ninth for the save. B.J. Upton drove in a run and scored for the Rays, and designated hitter Manny Ramirez went 1 for 3. Ross Ohlendorf pitched three innings for Pittsburgh, yielding one run and three hits.
