A house at 442 North Howard Ave., raided at 8:57 a.m. Monday, resulted in the seizure of about half an ounce of suspected crack cocaine and 2 grams of suspected heroin. One person from Youngstown was inside, but no charges have been filed against him. A search warrant was issued as part of an investigation into trafficking at the house. The Youngstown Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force, the Columbiana County Drug Task Force and Salem police took part. The agencies combined their information, and that led to the search warrant’s being issued.
Town-hall meeting
CANFIELD
The first of four town-hall meetings about proposed Canfield school levies will be at 7 p.m. Monday in the C.H. Campbell Elementary gym. Voters in May will decide on a 6.8-mill five-year levy that would bring in $3.8 million annually, and a 1.6-mill emergency five-year renewal levy which that continue to generate $890,000 annually.
The school-board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the board offices. The superintendent will announce positions that have been cut pending additional retirements and resignations. The other meetings are:
March 22 at 7 p.m., Canfield High School cafeteria.
April 5 at 7 p.m., Canfield Village Middle School gym.
April 11 at 7 p.m., Hilltop Elementary School multi-purpose room.
Jury selection
YOUNGSTOWN
Jury selection started Monday in the trial of a man charged for his role in the city’s fifth homicide of 2010.
Darold Shorter, 43, of Melrose Avenue, is charged with murder in the death of Lamont Brown, 33, of West Earle Avenue in January 2010. He is on trial in the courtroom of Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Police were sent to Brown’s home in the 300 block of West Earle Avenue and found Brown with stab wounds to his chest, neck, back and face.
Man arraigned
YOUNGSTOWN
The man charged in a weekend accident involving a city firetruck will be back in court March 30.
Frank Martinez, no age or address given, appeared for arraignment Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of failure to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle and failure to maintain marked lanes. He is scheduled for trial before Magistrate Anthony Sertick.
The fire department’s rescue-squad vehicle rolled over at 11:58 a.m. Saturday near Oak Street and Excelsior Avenue on the city’s East Side after firefighters tried to avoid striking the Martinez vehicle. Three firefighters were treated for minor injuries after the accident.
