Boston Marathon start to come in three waves
BOSTON
The Boston Marathon is adding another wave.
The race, which expects 27,000 entrants for its 115th edition April 18, will send the runners off in three separate starts. The groups will leave the starting line in Hopkinton about 20 minutes apart, which officials hope will lead to a more orderly race.
The Boston Marathon start was essentially the same for more than a century. In 2004, the women were given their own start, and in ’06 the men’s field was broken up into two waves.
The three-wave start will not increase the field size of the 2011 Boston Marathon. But it could lead to a bigger race down the road.
