AP: No security camera network for Ohio

COLUMBUS (AP) — Gov. John Kasich’s administration is shelving plans for a network that would have linked thousands of cameras to monitor roads, schools and private businesses in an effort to provide more eyes in emergencies.

The Camera Integration Project would have been accessible by police, firefighters and other authorized officials to get a quick view of what’s going on during major incidents.

Ohio Homeland Security Director Rob Glenn tells The Associated Press there are better and more widely beneficial ways to use the $234,000 it would have cost to create the camera network.

Glenn says the proposed network had limited uses, and the state is looking at computer-modeling systems that could provide more useful information to state agencies both before and after disasters such as tornadoes or flooding.
