The new movie “Take Me Home Tonight,” about a group of friends on a wild, all-night
The new movie “Take Me Home Tonight,” about a group of friends on a wild, all-night adventure, wallows in ’80s nostalgia, from big hair and acid-washed jeans to one-hit wonders such as “The Safety Dance” and “Come on Eileen.” Let’s revisit that magical time of wretched excess and choose the five best movies that came out the year “Take Me Home Tonight” is set: 1988.
v “Big”: Tom Hanks could not be more winning as a little boy trapped in a man’s body in this high-concept delight from director Penny Marshall.
v “Beetlejuice”: A quintessential early Tim Burton movie, with its cheeky humor, wild visuals and gleefully subversive vibe.
v “Dangerous Liaisons”: John Malkovich is freakishly sexy and seductive, and Glenn Close is every bit his intellectual equal, in director Stephen Frears’ film about bored aristocrats deceiving and manipulating each other in 18th century France.
v “Die Hard”: Just a big, booming Bruce Willis action flick, an unapologetic blockbuster, and very much a product of its time.
v “A Fish Called Wanda”: A delightfully silly and so very, very British screwball comedy that’s precise in its sloppiness, with proper humor that couldn’t be more profane.
“THE CELEBRITY APPRENTICE” (9 p.m., NBC): “The circus is back in town and you’re looking at the ringmaster!” declares Donald Trump as he draws the curtain on Season 11 of his reality-TV mainstay. Oh, and what a wacky circus it promises to be. Putting their egos — and their issues — on display will be Gary Busey, La Toya Jackson, Jose Canseco, Meat Loaf, Star Jones and Richard Hatch, just to name a few.
“Taking on Tyson” (10 p.m., Animal Planet): Who knew that famous (or infamous) former boxing champ Mike Tyson found “tranquillity” among pigeons? In “Taking on Tyson,” he spreads his wings by returning to his Brooklyn roots to raise — and race — his feathery friends.
“Breakout Kings” (10 p.m., A&E): In the new drama “Breakout Kings,” U.S. marshals team up with a group of convicts to chase down fugitives. It comes from a couple of producers who helped make the addictive, but utterly ridiculous, “Prison Break.”
