LORDSTOWN

Production at General Motor’s Lordstown plant will remain suspended through Monday.

Employees needed during the suspension or for plant start-up will be contacted by their supervisors, plant spokesman Tom Mock said.

A fire at Magna International’s Howell, Mich., plant caused Lordstown production to cease at 7 a.m. Friday.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which broke out at about 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to Magna International, an auto-parts manufacturer that supplies headliners for the Chevrolet Cruze.

A headliner is the fabric that lines the interior roof of a vehicle.

It is still unknown when production at the Lordstown plant will resume.

“We’re monitoring this on a day-to-day basis,” Mock said in an interview Friday afternoon.

GM spokeswoman Kimberly Carpenter said if the shutdown persists long enough, employees will receive temporary layoff benefits or be put on a short work week.

The plant would have to be shut down at least a week for a temporary layoff to take effect; a short work week would occur if employees can’t put in their regular 40 hours.

Workers can call the Lordstown employee information line at 800-934-9244 for updates.

The fire affected production at six other GM plants, according to the automaker.

Those facilities are: the Arlington plant in Arlington, Texas; the Detroit-Hamtramck plant in Detroit, Mich.; the Lansing Delta Township plant in Lansing, Mich.; the Flint plant in Flint, Mich.; the Fort Wayne plant in Fort Wayne, Ind.; and the Oshawa Consolidated plant in Canada.

Magna International has not returned calls requesting comment.
