Hilltop students share scientific secrets
By ABBY SLANKER
Fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary showcased their scientific secrets with family, friends and fellow students during the school’s annual Science Fair Feb. 17.
The students have been working on their projects since January and were guided step-by-step by the fourth-grade teachers.
Each student was required to conduct a scientific experiment on a topic that interested them and were then asked to create a display board describing their experiment.
Each display included the project’s purpose, the students’ hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure of the experiment, the results and a conclusion that stated if the hypothesis was correct or incorrect and what he or she had learned from the experiment.
Students could also include photos of themselves conducting their experiment, charts, diagrams, illustrations, histograms and graphs on their displays.
The students stood by their display board in the multi-purpose room and were available to explain their projects to attendees and fellow students and answer any questions they may have had concerning their topic. They were also required to provide an oral presentation to their teacher.
The fourth-graders chose a variety of topics, such as gravity in space, popping popcorn, evaporation, funky fruit, potato power, fun with gas and drying nails. One even asked the question, “Are video games bad or good?”
Each student received a ribbon for participating in the science fair.
