Jehvon Clarke had 22 points and seven rebounds to lead Canton Timken over Canfield, 55-27, in the boys Division I sectional basketball tournament at the Canton Civic Center on Friday night.
Rakim Reed had seven points and 14 rebounds for the No. 2-seed Trojans (19-2), while Desmond Rorie blocked six shots.
Canfield was 11-for-48 from the field and totaled 11 rebounds as a team. The Cardinals only had 10 turnovers.
Danny Campolito and Jake Ferrier scored eight points apiece for Canfield (8-14), which trailed 13-6 after one quarter and 25-17 at half, but never threatened in the second half.
“Holding [Timken] in the 40s or 50s was something we wanted to do,” said Canfield coach Todd Muckelroy. “ We thought that would help us be in the game. But we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. When you score 10 points in a half it’s going to be tough to win basketball games.”
Muckleroy was impressed with Timken.
“They’re so athletic. They get in passing lanes,” he said. “We knew we were going to have to hold the ball for 40 seconds, maybe a minute. I thought we got some open shots, but we just couldn’t knock them down.”
Timken coach Rick Hairston liked how his team handled the tempo.
“I thought defensively we were outstanding,” he said. “Canfield is one of those teams that is going to slow you down. They got that tempo where they wanted it and I’m happy our guys were able to play at that tempo.”
