Boardman bands featured in winter concert

The winter concert of the Boardman bands will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center. The concert will feature the Freshman Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.

Musical selections will include “Americans We,” “Senor Cadera,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “The Old Red Mill,” “September,” “The Hounds of Spring,” “Second Suite for Military Band” and “Duke Ellington.”

Alexis Trell will be the Senior Soloist featured with the Wind Ensemble.

Both the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble will also participate in the OMEA District 5 Large Group Adjudicated Event. Boardman is hosting this event for the third consecutive year.

On March 12 and 16, high school concert bands from northeast Ohio will perform three selections for judges, then play a piece they have never seen before for a separate judge. The judges issue ratings based on five levels of performance criteria.

Last year, both bands earned Superior (the highest) ratings. In fact, the bands consistently earn Superior and Excellent ratings each year. The Wind Ensemble performs in Class AA, which includes the most difficult music. Symphonic Band performs in Class C.

The cost for the winter concert is $3 for adults and $2 for students at the door. Senior citizens will be admitted free.

All performances for the band contest on Friday and March 12 are free and open to the public. Bands begin performing in the BPAC at 4:30 p.m. Friday, and play from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. March 12
