Band members score big at OMEA event
Seventy-three members of the Canfield High School Band Program participated in 71 events at the annual Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 5 Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event Feb. 12 at Poland High School.
Among the large contingent from Canfield, the students received 55 I’s, 15 II’s and 1 III.
The OMEA Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event is an opportunity for high school instrumental and vocal students to perform before an adjudicator and be evaluated on that performance.
The students entered in a variety of events from solo performances to large ensembles. Entering in three class categories from “A” or most difficult to “C” or least difficult, each event was evaluated and awarded a rating.
The rating system used is “I” for a superior performance, “II” for an outstanding performance, “III” for an acceptable or good performance, “IV” for a poor performance and “V” for a very poor performance.
Students who earned a superior rating included, CJ Artman, alto saxaphone; Michael Barkett, trumpet; Dalton Bosze, trumpet; Will Brown, snare drum; Michael Cardone, snare drum; Emily Damelio, English horn and oboe; Kelly Deal, snare drum; Katie Fernstrom, marimba and piano; Julie Gemmel, flute and piccolo; Aaron Graneto, marimba and snare drum; Jacob Hille, tuba; Krista Ladner, trumpet; Megan Martinko, flute; Nathan Metze, snare drum; Jacob Powell, euphonium; Vineet RaiBp clarinet; Robin Rockney, trombone; Olivia Roy, piano; Lydia Scheel, bassoon and flute; Michael Seifert, bassoon; Alicia Smith, English horn and oboe; Alicia Smith, trombone; Rachel Smith, trumpet; Elise Szabo, mezzo soprano and soprano; Mark Tareshawty, tuba; Leah Vitek, oboe; Hayley Ward, alto saxophone and piano; Jamie Watt, flute; Rollin Bresson, Bp clarinet; Andrew Jarvis, trombone; Mary Elizabeth Monda, flute; Alicia Smith, alto saxaphone; Radhika Taneja, trombone and Britton Parry, trombone.
The No. 1 clarinet trio of Stephanie Brandenstein, Rollin Bresson and Vineet Raiearned received a superior rating, along with the clarinet quartet of Vineet Rai, Stephanie Brandenstein, Madalyn Schaefer and Jessica Tseng.
Other superior ratings included the saxophone quartet of Hayley Ward, Alex Chiu, Karen Vankovich and Michael Seifert; the No. 1 woodwind quintet of Megan Martinko, Alicia Smith, Vineet Rai, Michael Seifert and Danielle Goddard; the trombone quartet of Brad Smith, Robin Rockney, Aly Saleh and Andrea Edwards; and the No. 1 brass quintet of Rachel Smith, Krista Ladner, Danielle Goddard, Brad Smith and Jacob Hille.
Tim Bresnahan, Michael Cardone, Jeannie DeAngelo, Kelly Dahman, Paul Dahman, Katie Fernstrom, Aaron Graneto, Beau Kuhn, Sean Meditz and Mary Wirtz made up the superior rated symphonic percussion.
The No. 2 clarinet trio of Jessica Tseng, Sara Martinko and Zach Eckert earned a superior rating, along with the No. 2 woodwind quintet of Mary Elizabeth Monda, Emily Damelio, Olivia DeMartino, Lydia Scheel and Elise Szabo.
The low brass trio of Spencer Saylor, Jacob Powell and Jacob Hille received a superior rating as well as the horn quartet of Gabrielle Brant, Danielle Goddard, Dana Duffett and Alex Tareshawty; the brass quintet of Michael Barkett, Edmond Pilolli, Alex Tareshawty, Robin Rockney and Mark Tareshawty; and the concert percussion of Dylan Bowald, Molly Brown, Will Brown, Kelly Deal, Michael Dercoli, Tyler Frklech, Nathan Metze and Lex Prindle.
