The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley is offering classes on “Heart Signs: Act in Time” and “Hands-Only CPR” on March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Poland Masonic Lodge, 7685 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road. The lodge will provide coffee and light snacks. The cost for the event is $15. Pre-registration is requested. Call 330-726-6063 in Mahoning County or 330-392-2551 in Trumbull County.

Gold Seal awarded

CANFIELD

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates received a three-year Gold Seal accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from the American College of Radiology (ACR). The Gold Seal represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety recognized, and is awarded to MRI facilities that meet ACR practice guidelines and technical standards in a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists.

Generating donations

CORTLAND

During March, Cortland Banks is generating donations of food and funds for local food banks by donating $25 for every new checking account opened or referred when the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Harvest for Hunger is mentioned. Cortland Banks also is accepting food-parcel donations at its offices.

The checking accounts require a minimum deposit of $50 not already on deposit with Cortland Banks. The offer is limited to one per customer and is not valid for current checking-account holders, for accounts closed in the past 30 days, or in combination with any other offer. Debit-card application is required, but qualification for debit card is not necessary to participate. Customers must maintain an active account for two months.

Raising funds

SHARON, PA.

Penn State Shenango’s Physical Therapist Assistant Club’s second annual 5K Run/Walk to raise funds for its club and UPMC Horizon Foundation’s Medical Equipment Recycling Program is April 2 beginning at 9 a.m.

Registration is $12 without a T-shirt or $15 with a T-shirt if postmarked or received by March 16. T-shirts are guaranteed to the first 150 pre-registered, paid participants. After March 16, registration is $15. Race-day registration is from 8 to 8:55 a.m. Race results will be available online at www.smileymiles.com.

The 5K event will be at a course around the Penn State Shenango campus in Sharon. Refreshments will be provided, and awards will be presented to the top-three men and women finishers in various age groups.

Medical ethics

GREENVILLE, PA.

UPMC Horizon, Thiel College, St. Paul Homes and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church are offering a Community Medical Ethics Project on March 28 at Thiel College in the Sawhill Georgian Room of the Howard Miller Student Center.

Two sessions with identical content are from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

The program is free.

Continuing medical- education credits are available to health-care professionals.
