Mayor donates to Crime Stoppers
Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Mayor Jay Williams is giving Crime Stoppers of Greater Youngstown the $5,000 he received from the Dominion Foundation as one of the organization’s Strong Men & Women: Excellence in Leadership winners.
The money will be used to make the public aware of Crime Stoppers’ anonymous cash rewards program, said Bill Sweeney, the organization’s president.
Crime Stoppers is a nonprofit organization formed by local citizens to fight crime. The program operates a secure tip line — 330-746-CLUE — and does not require informants to give their names. To protect the identity of the person providing information, a code number is assigned and if the information leads to the apprehension of the perpetrator, a cash reward is paid through a confidential system set up at an area bank.
Dominion’s Strong Men & Women program highlights the accomplishments of black role models and tells their stories in an educational series distributed to schools across Dominion’s retail electric and natural gas service areas.
Williams was one of six winners this year.
