Commissioners award contract
NEW CASTLE, Pa.
Lawrence County commissioners awarded a contract to J.G. Contracting, Carnegie, for erection of a 275-foot communications tower to improve emergency communications.
The company was low bidder at $319,764.
The tower will be erected in a 100-by-100 foot compound to be built in Spartan Park, Hickory Township.
In other business at their meeting Tuesday, commissioners heard that area rivers and streams were expected to crest Tuesday and then slowly recede, allowing life to begin returning to normal later this week for some 100 county residents who were evacuated from their homes due to flooding. It’s not clear when they were able to return.
Heavy rain in Lawrence County on Sunday night resulted in the evacuation Monday of about 100 people. Six people had to be put up Monday night in local hotels by the Red Cross, according to Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Brian Melcer. He said there were no reports of injuries or damage.
The flooding followed 1.75 inches of rain in the New Wilmington area and 1.25 inches in the south part of the county.
