Star Swiss skier Janka has heart surgery
GENEVA
World Cup overall champion Carlo Janka has had surgery to correct an irregular heartbeat and hopes to race Saturday.
The Swiss ski federation says the operation was done last Wednesday. Janka is aiming to ski in a World Cup giant slalom at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.
Janka, the Olympic champion in GS, was diagnosed with a heart rhythm problem in December. The 24-year-old Swiss originally planned to have surgery after the season but then chose to have it done during a break from racing. He says the timing was right after the world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Mascot controversy
MOSCOW
When the organizers of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics chose three mascots for the games, they might have thought the decision would satisfy almost everyone.
But now it looks like they pleased almost no one.
President Dmitry Medvedev is questioning whether the voting really reflected the people’s will. The creator of Misha the bear, the mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, says one of the Sochi mascots is a rip-off of his design. And firebrand politician Vladimir Zhrinovsky says all three are an insult to Russia.
