Scrappers hurt by 4 errors

Despite being limited to five hits on Wednesday, the State College Spikes defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, 5-2.

The Scrappers (9-4) produced seven hits but stranded 10 baserunners and made four errors. Mahoning Valley has a half-game lead over Auburn at the top of the Pinckney Division standings of the New York-Penn League.

Bryson Myles had three hits for the Scrappers, including a two-out double in the fifth inning that scored Cody Elliott for a 1-0 lead.

The Spikes (3-10) bounced right back, scoring three runs in their fifth-inning at-bat. Derek Trent started the rally with a lead-off single. After Samuel Gonzalez reached on pitcher David Wetmore’s throwing error, Brian Sharp singled to score Trent and Gonzalez for a 2-1 lead.

Taylor Lewis’ two-out single brought home Sharp for a two-run edge.

The Scrappers cut the lead to 3-2 with an unearned run in the sixth inning. Spikes second baseman Kyle Singer’s fielding error put Jordan Smith on base.

Smith scored on KC Serna’s two-out double.

The Spikes immediately retaliated with two runs in their half of the sixth inning. Gonzalez’s triple scored Chris Lashmet with the Spikes’ fourth run. A throwing error by Scrappers shortstop Tony Wolters allowed Gonzalez to score.

Wetmore (2-1) took the loss, allowing three unearned runs. He walked one and struck out six in five innings.
