Murder charge expected after woman dies

YOUNGSTOWN — Charges against a city man will be changed from felonious assault to murder after the 20-year-old woman he’s accused of shooting in the neck died.

Melesia Day survived for six days in an area hospital after being shot in the neck at her Tyrell Street home June 23. The 20-year-old mother died today at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Patrell Scott, 21, of Park Vista Drive, has been charged with felonious assault in connection with the shooting. He is father of Day’s young daughter.

Scott had been arraigned Friday before Judge Robert Milich of Youngstown Municipal Court on the assault charge. He is in the Mahoning County jail on a $55,000 bond.

A spokesman in City Prosecutor Jay Macejko’s office said the office will go forward with the preliminary hearing on the felonious assault charge pending against Scott.

The Mahoning County prosecutor, however, has been made aware of the change in circumstances and charges against Scott will likely change at the county level, a representative of the city prosecutor’s office said.
