Cleveland files federal lawsuit over hospital closing

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Clinic has made a $20 million deal meant to lessen the blow from closing a hospital in the city of East Cleveland.

Meanwhile, neighboring Cleveland has filed a federal lawsuit to keep Huron Hospital open.

The Plain Dealer reports the Clinic’s agreement with East Cleveland includes money to make up for lost payroll taxes, also funds to demolish the facility.

Cleveland Clinic Chief Executive Dr. Toby Cosgrove says the land will be turned over to East Cleveland as green space.

The Clinic said earlier this month it would close the 137-year-old hospital this summer.

The suit Cleveland filed Wednesday says the closing will hurt minority residents on the city’s east side and in East Cleveland.

The Clinic says in a statement it’s disappointed to learn of the lawsuit.
