Officials expected to vote on levy

WARREN

Trumbull County commissioners are expected to vote today to allow a 0.23-mill one-time levy to go on the ballot this November throughout Trumbull County to provide $785,931 for improvements to the Trumbull County Fairgrounds.

The levy, if passed, would cost the owner of a $100,000 home $7.04 in 2012.

The vote will come at the commissioners’ regular weekly meeting at 10:30 a.m., which this week will take place at the fairgrounds as part of the kickoff celebration for this year’s fair.

The 165th annual event runs through Monday at the corner of Hoagland- Blackstub and Everett-Hull roads in Bazetta Township.

Richard Roscoe, fair board president, first proposed the levy several weeks ago, but it took several weeks for Roscoe and county officials and to refine the list of projects and the cost.

For instance, Roscoe was proposing a 0.2-mill levy two weeks ago, but officials felt that an upgrade to the fairgrounds “package plant” sewage collection system should be included in the project, said Commissioner Paul Heltzel.

Other improvements would include a new perimeter fence, a fence in the grandstands to protect spectators from racing- related debris, post replacement on horse barns, repair of cracks in the concrete steps in the grandstand, electricity upgrades, restroom upgrades in two locations and replacement of roofs on four horse barns.

“They need some repairs out there,” Commissioner Frank Fuda said of the levy.
