The seven athletes profiled on these pages and on Vindy.com enjoyed great success during their respective seasons, bringing pride to the Valley and representing their schools and communities in the highest fashion.

In baseball, Ronnie Bovo of Springfield led his team to the state final in Division IV for the second time in three seasons. He moved behind the plate and as catcher became the Tigers’ leader in their drive to Columbus.

In softball, Erin Gabriel’s pitching and hitting were important to Poland’s state championship in Division II.

Ali Tolich of Austintown Fitch had a weekend to remember at the state track and field meet. She received the gold medal in the discus and her high school diploma on the winner’s stand. Lauren Schattinger of Lakeview won regional championships in two sprint events and finished on the podium twice in Columbus.

In boys track and field, McDonald won the Division III state championship and the Blue Devils’ Miles Dunlap and Matthias Tayala are recognized for their achievements. Dunlap won one hurdles race, finished second in another, and third in a sprint, while Tayla dominated his competition in the shot put and discus.

And in boys tennis, Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK repeats as Athlete of the Year after advancing to the second round of the state championships.
