1870: The first section of Atlantic City, N.J.’s Boardwalk, is opened to the public.

1911: John J. McDermott becomes the first American-born golf player to win the U.S. Open, played in Chicago.

1936: President Franklin D. Roosevelt is nominated for a second term of office by delegates to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

1948: The Berlin Airlift begins in earnest after the Soviet Union cuts off land and water routes to the isolated western sector of Berlin.

1950: President Harry S. Truman authorizes the Air Force and Navy to enter the Korean conflict.

1990: President George H.W. Bush goes back on his “no-new-taxes” campaign pledge, conceding that tax increases would have to be included in any deficit-reduction package worked out with congressional negotiators.

1986: The U.S. House of Representatives sends to the Senate a proposal for construction of a $3.6 million Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center adjacent to the Youngstown Municipal Airport.

Youngstown State University awards a five-year contract for food service to ARA Campus Dining Services of Philadelphia, over the objections of U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr., who wanted the contract to go to a local company, Valley Foods of Youngstown.

1971: Three Youngstown area pilots help usher the Air Reserve Base at Youngstown Municipal Airport into the jet age as they land A37 Dragonfly fighter-bombers at the airport. They are Maj. William J. Lodwick, Capt. Jeffrey T. Heal and Maj. John McKenna.

Wendell Carter, 20, of Dean Street, dies in South Side Hospital of injuries suffered in a 70-foot fall from a broken rope during an attempted escape from the Mahoning County Jail.

1961: James J. McNicholas, 95, former Youngstown police chief, dies in St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for more than a month after breaking his hip in a fall.

Lawson Milk Co. stores in the Youngstown area remain open on Sunday, but in deference to blue laws, displays of merchandise that can’t be sold on Sunday are roped off.

A 50-year-old Lane Avenue man is arrested on two counts of violating liquor laws for selling drinks on Sunday at the Army & Navy Garrison, 15300 South Ave.

1936: Spurred by favorable weather and war bonus payments, retail trade rises to the highest point for any period since 1930. Also, district steel mill schedules remain at 79 percent.

Dr. Edmund Morris Morgan, named acting dean of the Harvard Law School, is a Youngstown native and graduate of the Rayen School.

The Community Corporation announces distribution of $224,292 to welfare agencies in Youngstown, a 5 percent increase over a year earlier.
