Salem Golf Club hosts tournament

SALEM

The 13th annual Women’s Ohio State Senior Amateur tournament will be held on Monday and Tuesday at the Salem Golf Club.

Lynn Thompson of Cincinnati, the 2010 champion, will defend her title against 50 competitors. Past champions who are entered are: Mary Ann Bierman, Chagrin Falls; Cathy Jefferson, Centerville; Gail Hackett, Canton; and Daryl Nels, Xenia.

Contestant ages range from 50-84. Canton’s Pauline Whitacre is the oldest player entered. The two-day stroke play event is flighted by handicaps.

Ryan Blaney on pole for ARCA race

WINCHESTER, Ind.

Ryan Blaney qualified in a Winchester Speedway ARCA record of 15.837 seconds (113.658 mph) to win the pole before his first series start.

Blaney lead the field for the Winchester ARCA 200 late Saturday night.

Ryan Blaney is the son of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Dave Blaney.

Roethlisberger might need surgery

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger says he may eventually need surgery on a broken right foot that bothered him during the team’s run to the Super Bowl last year.

Roethlisberger told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he could have opted for surgery following the season but decided to let it heal after talking to doctors.

Roethlisberger aggravated the injury during a game against Buffalo last November, though he did not miss a snap.

He played the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs with a special cleat fitted with two metal plates. The Steelers lost to Green Bay 31-25 in the Super Bowl.

The 29-year-old quarterback threw for 3,200 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. He said the ongoing NFL lockout has helped him recover from the injury but he hasn’t ruled out surgery at some point.

Phillies Oswalt out until August

PHILADELPHIA

Phillies right-hander Roy Oswalt has a mild bulging disc in his back and likely won’t return until August.

Oswalt was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday. He is 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 13 games. The three-time All-Star is 1-5 with a 4.06 ERA over his last eight starts

Sturm retains WBA title

COLOGNE, Germany

Felix Sturm retained his WBA middleweight title with a contentious split-decision win over Irish challenger Matthew Macklin in the Lanxess Arena on Saturday.

Two judges awarded it 116-112 in favor of the defending champion fighting in his hometown, while the other scored 115-113 to Macklin after a thrilling fight.

Sturm (36-2-1) successfully defended his title for the 10th time since losing it to and winning it back from Javier Castillejo in 2006-07.

Mexico defeats USA

PASADENA, Calif.

Pablo Barrera scored two goals and Mexico rallied to beat the United States 4-2 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl.

Andres Guardado and Giovani Dos Santos also scored for Mexico, which has won two consecutive Gold Cup titles and six overall. The victory qualifies Mexico for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, a preview of the 2014 World Cup.

Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan scored to help the United States build a 2-0 lead.

Nationals eye Johnson

CHICAGO

Davey Johnson is poised to take over as manager of the Washington Nationals, replacing Jim Riggleman, who abruptly resignedon Thursday.

General manager Mike Rizzo told Fox that Johnson has agreed to terms but there are still contract details to be worked out before an announcement can be made. It will be Johnson’s fifth managerial stop.
