Poland

Ashley Ruggiero of Poland has graduated on the dean’s list from Capital School of Law in Columbus with her juris doctorate degree.

Ruggiero is a 2004 graduate of Poland Seminary High School and Ohio State University, where she received her bachelor’s degree cum laude. She worked as a page for the Ohio Legislature while attending the university and as an extern at the Grange Mutual Insurance Co.’s Columbus headquarters.

She is the daughter of Jayne Zajack of Poland and Robert Ruggiero of Columbiana, and granddaughter of Richard and Jane Patton of Poland and John Chengelis of Austintown.

DOCTORS

Liberty

Monica A. Selak, daughter of August and Maria Selak, recently received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

She received the Thomas D. Hunnicutt Award for Excellence in the field of family medicine.

She will complete her residency in family medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Selak was a 2003 graduate of Ursuline High School and a 2007 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology.

Boardman

Brian C. Bockelman of Boardman was awarded the degree of doctor of medicine from Xavier University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bockelman, son of Lorenz and Joyce Bockelman, received his undergraduate degree in pre-medicine from Ohio University. The 1999 Boardman High School graduate accepted a first-year position at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Fla. His residency begins in July, and he will specialize in pathology.

Poland

Nicole Marie Shirilla has earned her doctor of medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Shirilla is a 1996 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High school and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Notre Dame.

She has been accepted into the combined internal medicine/pediatrics residency program at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals Medical Center in Cleveland.

During medical school, Dr. Shirilla was elected to the Watson Humanism Honor Society and was the recipient of the Charles Louis Wood M.D. Award in Ambulatory Pediatrics. She conducted research in San Giovanni Rotundo, Italy, at La Casa Sollievo Della Sofferenza, a hospital founded by Padre Pio. In March, she completed a monthlong rotation at UPMC Beacon Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, focusing on the use of robotics in surgery.

Dr. Shirilla is the daughter of Greg and Mary Lou Shirilla, granddaughter of Mary Lou Klempay and the late James Klempay and the late George and Edith Shirilla.

Canfield

Vita June Cooper Lamberson has received her doctor of medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

During her final year of medical school, Dr. Cooper Lamberson was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

She is a 2002 graduate of Canfield High School and the daughter of Rodney Lamberson and Dr. Linda Cooper. Her grandparents are Frank and Lotis Cooper of Canfield.

Dr. Cooper Lamberson has moved to Nashville, Tenn., for residency training in pediatrics at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt University.

HONORS

WARREN

Judge Thomas A. Swift of Trumbull County Probate Court has received the 2009-11 Meritorious Service Award from the Ohio Association of Probate Judges for his work to improve Ohio’s probate laws.

The award was presented by Judge Philip Mayer, president of the organization, and took place at the annual meeting of probate, juvenile and family court judges. It is awarded to judges whose service enhances public access to and understanding of the probate system, according to a press release.

Judge Swift serves on a variety of boards. He is chairman of the Ohio Judicial Conference and is past president of the Ohio Association of Probate Judges.
