The 2011 Greatest Golfer of the Valley gets started next week with the juniors hitting the links first.

If your son or daughter wants to be crowned The Greatest, they have three chances to qualify starting July 5 at Diamondback Golf Course, or July 8 & 11 at Tamer Win Golf & Country Club and Tam O’Shanter Golf Club.

Each host course is having various age divisions to celebrate junior golf. But to qualify for “The Greatest,” juniors must compete in the oldest age bracket at each site. And you must be 18 through Aug. 31.

Like we grew the adult version of The Greatest in 2011, we aim to grow the junior divisions in future years as we’re able to build up the sponsorship aspect of The Greatest.

Any competitor who was a senior or junior in high school this past year can also compete for a share in $5,000 in scholarships presented by PowerBilt Golf and Golf Headquarters in Boardman and Niles. All junior details are on vindy.com/golf.

Adult list up to date; are you on it?

The seven divisions that make up the adult Greatest Golfer of the Valley are filling up fast for the three-day tourney that launches Aug. 26.

Our player list is pretty much up to speed. Go to vindy.com/golf/tournament to check out the list to see A) If you’re on it, and B) Who else is on it.

We have room for 160 golfers. Several divisions are near capacity, as is the entire event. Get in, or settle for watching.

We finalized the courses this week for the adult tourney.

Three men’s divisions (Open, Divs. 2 & 3) will tee off Friday, Aug. 26 at Mill Creek North Course and then Youngstown Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 27. The ladies, seniors and men’s 4th division will square off Friday at Reserve Run, then Saturday at Trumbull Country Club.

A field of at least 60 golfers will head to The Lake Club on Sunday for the title.
