Sign up for annual tournament

Austintown Community Baseball is hosting its annual Recreational League All-Star baseball tournament at Champ Park from July 16-26 for 8U through 12U boys and 8U girls

The tournament is double elimination and open to community recreational teams with a maximum of 13 players per roster. The entry fee is $150 per team and no roster changes will be permitted after the start of the tournament.

Tournament bracket draw times for boys are July 11 at 6:30 p.m. for 8U and 7:30 p.m. for 9U, July 12 at 6:30 p.m. for 10U and 7:30 p.m. for 11U and July 13 at 6:30 p.m. for 12U. Girls 8U will draw July 13 at 7:30 p.m. A team representative must be present at the draw.

The Brett Wilcox Benefit Golf Outing in scheduled for July 24 at Lakeside Golf Course in Lake Milton.

The entry fee of $65 per golfer or $250 per foursome and includes cart, green fees and dinner. Dinner only is available for $20.

The four-man scramble will have an 8 a.m. shotgun start with doughnuts and coffee available at registration. There will be hole-in-one prizes, 50/50 raffle and skins game. Registration deadline is July 10 and is limited to 144 golfers.

Wilcox was diagnosed with AML leukemia on Oct. 5, 2009. He has received aggressive chemotherapy and a cord blood transplant. Since the transplant Wilcox condition has improved, but he faces the risk of rejection for five years. Wilcox’s parents have been able to return to work after 14 months, but still face financial hardship. They plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to help other families dealing with this type of cancer.

Classes offered for football officials

The Youngstown District Football Officials Association is hosting a training class for new football officials this summer. The class will be at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Dr., Boardman.

Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. beginning July 19. The class is open to participants ages 14 and up. For information either on the association or the classes, call Don Sabo at 330-788-7110 or Ray Makara at 330-533-1079. Local athlete selected as MVP

Nicholas DeSalvo, a member of the Ohio Extreme 11U travel baseball team out of North Canton, was recently selected as MVP of the 11U division at the Strongsville Memorial Day Tournament.

The Ohio Extreme won first place in the tournament, placed first in the second annual Ohio Extreme Spring Bash, and were runners-up at the Team Sports Nations Baseball State Qualifier.

Fitch golf team seeking members

Any boy wishing to try out for the Austintown Fitch golf team must contact coach Ed Santor at 330-793-6760 or fitchgolfcoach@yahoo.com as soon as possible.

Golfers must have a current physical exam on record before practice and tryouts.

New records at IHM festival run

Amanda McNinch from Poland took first overall in the women’s division of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Festival 5K run June 11 with a time of 21:47. She was followed by Jen Love (22:11) and Amanda Fire (22:47.) McNinch’s time in the women’s run set a record in the 30-34 group.

Paul Robinette from Girard ran a 17:21 to capture the men’s award with Jason Tatarka second (17:21) and Joshua Reid third (17:42.) In the men’s 70 and over group, Lou Alaksin set a new record with a time of 22:15.
