Historical and famous figures came to life with the help of Hilltop Elementary School third-graders during the school’s 25th annual Famous Americans program June 2.

Each student donned a costume to portray a famous American figure of their choice during the show. During the month of May, students researched their choice, wrote a speech about him or her, created a costume to wear during the program and completed a classroom project on their famous American.

Some examples of the famous Americans chosen included Larry Bird, Ben Franklin, Barack Obama, Walt Disney, Jonas Salk, Molly Pitcher, Amelia Earhart, Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Oprah Winfrey, Milton Hershey, Dr. Seuss, Sacajawea, Katie Couric, Sandra Day O’Connor, Abigail Smith Adams and Paul Revere.

The Parade of Flags started the show. As a carrier and a guard escorted the flag down the aisle, a narrator gave the history of each flag. Flags presented included St. George’s Cross, King’s Colors, British Red Ensign, Bunker Hill, Rhode Island Regiment, Fort Moultrie, Continental, Gadsden, Grand Union, Betsy Ross, Bennington, Star Spangled Banner, Perry’s Flag, Alamo 1824, Stars and Bars, Confederate Battle, “48 Star” and Old Glory.

Each student took his or her turn at the microphone as they gave a speech posing as their character.

After each class had finished, the students joined together to sing, led by music teacher Tom Scurich and accompanied by Roni Sue Gregory. Songs included “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor,” “Beautiful Ohio,” “Fifty, Nifty United States,” “Armed Forces Salute,” “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”

During “Armed Forces Salute,” Scurich asked members and veterans of the armed forces to stand when their anthem was sung. Before each anthem was performed during the salute, students presented the POW flag, Army flag, Coast Guard flag, Marine flag, Air Force flag and Navy flag.
