The Greater Youngstown Track and Cross Country Officials Association hosted its 22nd annual awards dinner at the Salem Community Center June 14.

The top male and female senior performers for the 2010-2011 seasons were honored from Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Boardman senior distance standout Katie Heney was chosen by the association as the Mahoning County Outstanding Female Cross Country Runner.

Heney had her best cross country season in her four-year career at Boardman as she finished as the Suburban League Champion, running a time of 20:38.4. At the Federal League meet, she placed 10th (20:02,) tying her best league finish her sophomore year when she ran 20:04.

Katie experienced much success in her first three years of cross country after coming from St. Charles Middle School. In her freshman year, she was eighth at the Suburban meet, 27th at the Federal League meet and 20th at the district meet.

In her sophomore year, she was fourth at the Suburban Meet, 10th at the Federal League meet, and 17th at the district meet.

In Katie’s junior year, she was coming off a stress fracture suffered during the previous track season and placed 22nd at the Suburban League meet, 21st at the Federal League meet and 23rd at the district meet.

Heney was also a four-time Indoor State Qualifier in track, earning All-Ohio honors her sophomore year in the 3200-meter run and qualified three years to the Regional meet in the 3200 run.

She was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Link Crew, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and was selected by her classmates as the Queen of the Sweetheart Dance this year.

Heney is the daughter of Elaine Heney and has earned a scholarship to Youngstown State University for cross country and track and will major in nursing.
