US stocks open lower on weak technology earnings

Stocks are edging down at the start of trading. Technology companies had the greatest losses.

Micron Technology Inc. is down 10 percent and Oracle Corp. is down 4 percent after both companies reported weak earnings. Those stocks fell the most of any in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index.

The government said earlier today that the economy grew at a sluggish 1.9 percent rate in the first quarter, up slightly from a previous estimate. Economists expect little improvement during the second quarter.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 22 points, or 0.2 percent, at 12,027. The S&P 500 is down 1, or 0.1 percent, at 1,282. The Nasdaq composite index is down 5, or 0.2 percent, at 2,681.
