Township Police and Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team took a 71-year-old man to Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, for psychological evaluation after a four-hour intervention.

The incident began about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when police were called to a home in the 4600 block of Fifth Avenue.

The man’s 70-year-old wife had called police and told them that he had locked himself in a bedroom and may have a handgun.

She also told police that her husband had health issues. When police arrived, they tried to make verbal contact with the man, who did not reply.

Officers were able to gain access to the bedroom, where they saw the man with a .357 handgun.

Negotiators from the crisis-response team were able to talk the man into surrendering, and he was taken into custody. The police also took several firearms from the residence.
