An elderly couple remained in a Pittsburgh hospital Thursday after a traffic accident that sent construction workers running for safety.

Bennie Carangie, 86, was in critical condition, and Mary Ann Carangie, 84, was in good condition, UPMC Presbyterian Hospital reported. The couple live on 13th Street in West Pittsburg, Pa.

At 2:14 p.m. Wednesday, Bennie Carangie did not stop for a stop sign at the end of the on-ramp from state Route 168 to the U.S. 422 bypass, state police said.

He cut off a westbound Mack truck, which couldn’t stop and hit him, police said.

The car traveled more than 200 feet on a jersey barrier before coming to rest on the barrier, facing east. The truck came to rest on the Mahoningtown bridge. The crash was in an active construction zone.

The Carangies had to be extricated from their car, and they were flown to UPMC.

The truck driver, Greg A. Cieply, 55, of New Castle, was not hurt.
