Ducks’ Perry wins Hart Trophy

Ducks’ Perry wins Hart Trophy

LAS VEGAS

Corey Perry crashed the Sedins’ NHL MVP party.

The Anaheim Ducks forward, who scored a league-best 50 goals, won the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night. His surprise win came at the expense of scoring champion Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks, who was trying to complete an unprecedented MVP double dip after his twin brother and teammate Henrik took the honors last year.

Perry’s win capped the two-hour NHL Awards ceremony. Even he said he didn’t expect to take home the trophy. Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis, who won the Lady Byng Trophy for gentlemanly and excellent play, was the third MVP finalist.

Woods to miss AT&T National

ORLANDO, Fla.

Tiger Woods will miss another golf tournament as he recovers from injuries to his left leg, saying Wednesday he will not play in the AT&T National next week outside Philadelphia.

“Doctor’s orders,” Woods posted on Twitter.

He said he would be at Aronimink to support the tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. Woods said he is “feeling stronger,” but is still not 100 percent.

Woods, who has slipped to No. 17 in the world ranking, has not completed a tournament since he tied for fourth at the Masters. He said he hurt his left knee and Achilles hitting a shot on the 17th hole of the third round from an awkward stance in the pine straw.

Suns won’t trade Steve Nash

PHOENIX

The Phoenix Suns are again shooting down Steve Nash trade rumors.

Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby emphatically said that the two-time league MVP isn’t going anywhere, and he added center Marcin Gortat to the untouchable list.

In an email on Wednesday, he repeated the statement he made earlier in the day to The Arizona Republic, saying, “We are not trading Marcin Gortat, period. End of sentence. We are not trading Steve Nash, period, exclamation point.”

The latest denial came after ESPN reported that the Suns were in talks with the Minnesota Timberwolves over trading Nash for the No. 2 pick in Thursday’s draft.

Earlier, the New York Post mentioned a possible trade to the Knicks for Chauncey Billups, a deal that made little sense unless Nash asked for it.

Feds to discuss another Bonds trial

SAN FRANCISCO

Federal prosecutors are due in court Thursday to discuss whether to schedule another perjury trial for Barry Bonds.

A jury convicted Bonds of obstruction of justice April 13. The jury deadlocked on three counts charging the home run king lied to a grand jury about performance-enhancing drug use.

Prosecutors must decide whether to drop those charges or schedule a new trial.

Meanwhile, Bonds’ attorneys have asked U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston to acquit Bonds of the obstruction conviction or toss it out and hold another trial on that count. They argue Bonds was wrongly convicted of obstructing a grand jury because he gave a rambling answer about being a child of a celebrity when asked about injecting steroids.

The judge will decide that issue later.

FIFA has ’compelling’ bribery evidence

GENEVA

FIFA had “compelling” evidence that Mohamed bin Hammam and Jack Warner conspired to bribe voters in the organization’s presidential election before it suspended them from world soccer’s governing body.

FIFA’s ethics committee concluded that the allegations bin Hammam offered $40,000 cash payments to Caribbean officials “constitute prima facie an act of bribery.”

A report into Warner’s case, seen by The Associated Press, said the then-FIFA vice president was an accessory to bribery who offered “mere self-serving declarations” at a hearing last month.
