YSU football camp kicks off today

YOUNGSTOWN

Sixty students all on the autism spectrum will take part in the skills camp, which has become an annual event during The Rich Center summer program.

For children with autism, working with the YSU athletes, coaches and staff builds on their knowledge of football and their ability to play the sport.

“All physical activity can be therapeutic. We have seen positive results in our classrooms using this technique,” Rich Center teacher Scot McClelland said. “And it is fun for students to participate and to interact with other members of the YSU community.”

Feds asking for delay of Bonds hearing

SAN FRANCISCO

Federal prosecutors are asking for a two-month postponement of Barry Bonds’ next court date.

The government was expected to announce at a Friday hearing whether it intended to retry Bonds on three perjury charges a jury deadlocked on after a month-long trial in April.

Bonds was convicted of obstruction of justice and a judge was to set a sentencing date on Friday. His lawyers have filed legal papers asking that Bonds’ conviction be tossed out.

A second court hearing was scheduled for July 1 to consider Bonds’ argument that the jury erred in convicting him of making a misleading statement to a grand jury investigating a steroid distribution ring.

Prosecutors on Tuesday asked the judge to delay both hearings until Aug. 26.

Clemens’ lawyers seeking limits

WASHINGTON

Roger Clemens is trying to prevent his former New York Yankee teammates from telling jurors in his upcoming criminal trial that they got performance-enhancing drugs from Clemens’ former trainer.

Clemens’ attorneys argued in a filing Tuesday night that such evidence could create “guilt by association” in juror’s minds and asked a judge to block it.

McNamee says he gave steroids and human growth hormone to Clemens, but the pitching great denies it.
