Valley home sales down from May ’10

Home sales in the Mahoning Valley dropped in May compared with a year ago.

According to statistics released by the Youngstown-Columbiana Association of Realtors, 185 homes were sold in Mahoning County last month, down 20 from the 205 sold in May 2010. In Trumbull County, 152 units were sold in May, down 16 from 168 last May. In Columbiana County, 49 homes were sold last month compared with 68 in May 2010.

All three counties saw increases compared with April’s sales totals, however.

Trumbull was the only county that saw an increase in average sale price compared with last May. The average was $75,427, up from $69,753.

Auto-theft rate falls

The auto-theft rate in the Mahoning Valley fell in 2010, according to data released today by the The National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman region had a theft rate of 202 per 100,000 in population. The Valley was the 137th-ranked metro area nationally. The report ranked 366 metro areas. Auto thefts nationwide fell for the seventh-straight year.

NorTech to host networking event

NorTech Energy Enterprise is hosting a networking presentation on energy storage and smart grid from 5 to 8 p.m. July 21 at Youngstown State University’s Williamson College of Business Administration.

RTI signs agreement with German firm

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh-based RTI International Metals Inc. announced Tuesday the signing of a long-term agreement to provide titanium products to German company MTU Aero Engines.

MTU develops, manufactures and markets commercial and military aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines.

The agreement lasts through 2022.

DRS breaks ground on data center

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown-based DRS LLC broke ground Tuesday on a municipal data center in Westerville, a Columbus suburb. DRS serves clients in 39 states and 14 countries and has offices in Youngstown, Akron and Pittsburgh.

Hulu mulls offer

LOS ANGELES

Online video service Hulu is exploring putting itself up for sale after receiving an unsolicited takeover offer, a person familiar with the matter said Tuesday.

The offer was large enough to make Hulu’s board review the deal and consider seeking other potential buyers, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions are confidential.
