NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.

Mike Sandy has been named defensive coordinator for the Westminster College football team.

Sandy will continue to serve as the team’s linebackers coach, a position he has held the last two seasons. He is a native of Medina.

Miller judges bout

PANAMA CITY, PANAMA

Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge for Anselmo Moreno’s win over Lorenzo Parra in the eighth round of Saturday’s WBA Bantamweight Championship bout. It was Miller’s 89th title bout.

Brooks, Bayma set for Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Steven Brooks of Boardman and Ann Marie Bayma of Howland will continue their swimming careers at Westminster College.

Brooks was a four-year letter winner, three-time district qualifier, one-time state qualifier and team captain for the Spartans. His best times were 25.11 in the 50 backstroke, 55.10 in the 100 backstroke and 22.71 in the 50 freestyle.

The son of Keith and Elizabeth Brooks, he plans to major in business administration.

Bayma was a captain and three-year letter winner for the Tigers. Her best times were 2:15 in the 200 freestyle, 6:08 in the 500 freestyle, 28.08 in the 50 freestyle and 2:31 in the 200 IM.

The daughter of Edmund and Rose Marie Bayma, she plans to major in business administration.

Root Sports to show 1971 World Series

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh regional channel Root Sports will broadcast Game 7 of the 1971 World Series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Providing commentary will be commentary will be Game 7 winning pitcher Steve Blass and Root Sports’ Rob King. The game was played in Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium on Oct., 17, 1971, and originally televised on NBC.

Cards’ Pujols out with fractured arm

ST. LOUIS

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols will be out for 4-6 weeks with a fractured left forearm.

The team announced the results of an MRI and CT scan Monday, a day after Pujols was injured during a home game against Kansas City. The team said Pujols has a non-displaced fracture of his left radius and his arm is in a splint.

Pujols was hurt on a play at first base in the sixth inning. He was fielding a long throw and Kansas City’s Wilson Betemit collided with his glove hand as Pujols was pulled toward home.

The Cards’ three-time MVP went down to the ground in pain. Pujols is hitting .279 this yeart.

Red Bull leaving NASCAR

The Red Bull energy drink company plans to cut its ties with NASCAR and will try to sell its two-car Sprint Cup team following the 2011 season, SceneDaily.com reported Monday, citing sources.

The team, which opened in 2007, has one victory in its five-plus seasons of Cup competition.

The 2011 Red Bull lineup consists of drivers Kasey Kahne, who is 19th in the standings and will join Hendrick Motorsports next year, and Brian Vickers, who is 24th in the standings and whose contract runs through the end of the season.

Lidstrom returns to Red Wings

DETROIT

Nicklas Lidstrom proved to himself he is still one of the NHL’s best defenseman last season and that is good news for Detroit fans.

The 41-year-old Lidstrom will return for a 20th season with the Red Wings.

“Coming off this season, helped me to make this decision,” Lidstrom said after agreeing to a one-year deal worth $6.2 million, same as last year.

Lidstrom is a Norris Trophy finalist for the 11th time in 13 seasons. If he wins the award for being the league’s top defenseman — it would be his seventh — on Wednesday, he will match Doug Harvey’s total and trail Bobby Orr’s record by only one.
