Poland man's bond set at $100K for vehicular homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — A Poland man accused of killing a 79-year-old woman in a car accident asked the court for a $20,000 bond, but a court magistrate said he will have to pay five times that amount before getting out of Mahoning County jail.

Kevin Rolland, 30, of Katahdin Drive, is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the May 11 death of Vera Gabrick. Gabrick was killed in a two-car accident at the intersection of Midlothian Boulevard and Hudson Avenue on the city’s South Side, where she sustained blunt-force injuries to the abdomen. She was wearing a seat belt.

Rolland appeared in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court for an initial appearance on the felony charge against him. He has hired Atty. David Betras as his lawyer, but he was represented at today’s arraignment by Atty. Bill Bartos.

Bartos informed Magistrate Daniel P. Dascenzo that Rolland was in danger of losing his job because he is in the county jail. He asked the court to allow Rolland to post a $20,000 bond to ensure his appearance for future court dates.

Dascenzo, however, ordered Rolland to post a $100,000 bond before he can be released.
