A utility pole pinned a car when a Youngstown Street Department truck brought down three utility poles after snagging onto power lines. The incident, which occurred about 10:30 a.m. Monday at Wilbur Street and South Avenue on the South Side, closed the intersection for several hours.

YOUNGSTOWN

A portion of South Avenue, one of the city’s most-traveled roads, was closed for several hours after a city street department truck pulled down power lines and utility poles.

Street-department workers were at a recently demolished house on Wilbur Street, near the South Avenue intersection, cleaning debris when a street-truck pulling through a parking lot got snagged on power wires about 10:30 a.m. Monday, said Tom Sakmar, the department’s foreman.

That caused a pole at that intersection to fall and led to “a domino effect,” taking down two other poles, one on Wilbur Street and the other on South Avenue, said David Turner, Ohio Edison’s area manager for Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

The second pole, on Wilbur, landed on the roof of a car driving on that street, Sakmar said.

The pole caused the car’s sunroof to break and scratched the vehicle, Sakmar said. The street-department truck had a broken side mirror and scratches, he said.

No one was hurt, Sakmar said.

In order to make the repairs, South Avenue between Laclede Avenue and Miller Street was immediately closed, Sakmar and Turner said.

The repair work was done and the street reopened by Monday evening, Turner said.
