Section of South Avenue closed to repair downed electric poles, utility lines

A portion of South Avenue, one of the city’s most-traveled roads, is closed after a city street department truck pulled down power lines and utility poles.

Street department workers were at a recentl -demolished house on Wilbur Street, near the South Avenue intersection, cleaning debris when a street truck pulling through a parking lot got snagged on power wires about 10:30 a.m. today, said Tom Sakmar, the department’s foreman.

That caused a pole at that intersection to fall and led to “a domino effect” taking down two other poles, one on Wilbur Street and the other on South Avenue, said David Turner, Ohio Edison’s area manager for Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

The second pole, on Wilbur, landed on the roof of a car driving on that street, Sakmar said.
