Feller Award presented

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.

The late Bob Feller is not forgotten in Cooperstown.

Dmitri Young was given the inaugural Bob Feller Player of the Game Award at the Hall of Fame Classic. He hit a three-run homer in the third annual old-timers’ game Sunday and was the most valuable player.

Feller’s wife, Anne, made the trip from the Cleveland area and called it an honor.

Major League Baseball stopped participating in the annual Hall of Fame Game at Doubleday Field three years ago. This one-stoplight village then found a hero in Feller. Feller was enshrined in Cooperstown in 1962 and didn’t want to see a tradition die after nearly seven decades.

Connors plans memoir in 2012

NEW YORK

Jimmy Connors has a memoir coming, with a few overhead smashes promised.

HarperCollins announced Sunday it has signed up the brash tennis superstar for a book coming in June 2012, when Connors turns 60.

The currently untitled memoir will cover everything from his 1970s romance with Chris Evert to his fierce competition with John McEnroe.

The book’s publication also will coincide with the 30th anniversary of his last Wimbledon victory, when he defeated McEnroe in the final.

Connors won eight Grand Slam singles titles as a player in the 1970s and ‘80s.
