Harold Guerrero rebounded from a rocky first inning to pitch five innings, and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers got significant contributions from the bottom of their batting order to defeat the Jamestown Jammers, 4-3, in a New York-Penn League game on Saturday night at Eastwood Field.

The victory evened the Scrappers’ record at 1-1 in the young season.

One night after the Scrappers lost 9-3 in the season opener, Guerrero gave up three runs in the first inning on Saturday. But he allowed only one more hit over the next four innings.

The Scrappers’ offense came to life in the bottom of the first, scoring three runs to tie the score.

They took the lead in the fourth inning, and relievers Cody Allen, Enosil Tejada and Kyle Petter finished up the victory.

Petter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first save.

Jamestown scored all of its runs in the first inning with two outs.

Terrence Dayleg, Rand Smith and Jobduan Morales hit back-to-back singles, with Dayleg scoring on Morales’ hit.

Eddie Rodriguez then hit a bases-clearing triple to center to make it 3-0.

The Scrappers answered quickly in the bottom of the inning. Todd Hankins and Tony Walters led off with singles. Bryson Myles struck out and Jake Lowery lined out to left, but Alexander Lavisky was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Jerrud Sabourin and Aaron Siliga then earned walks to force in two runs, before Cody Elliott’s single tied the score.

The Scrappers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Siliga led off with a double, then moved to third on Elliott’s single. Casey Serna grounded into a force out, scoring Siliga with the go-ahead run.

Jamestown had a chance to tie the game in the eighth against Tejada. With one out Dayleg walked and Rand Smith — who had three hits on the night — singled to right field. After Morales struck out, Tejada walked Rodriguez to load the bases, but struck out Nestor Castillo looking to end the threat.
