Marines health survey
ATLANTA
The Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry is sending a health survey to more than 300,000 Marine Corps personnel and civilians who lived or worked at Marine bases Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Camp Pendleton, Calif., before 1986.
The survey asks questions about health conditions possibly related to contaminants that ATSDR has identified and may lead to scientifically useful health information associated with exposure of contaminated water at Camp Lejeune, said Christopher J. Portier, Ph.D., director of the Centers for Disease Control and OPrevention’s National Center for Environmental Health.
The survey answers a congressional mandate that called for ATSDR to develop a health survey from Camp Lejeune to include selected military personnel, civilians and family members who were there before 1986.
Surveys also will be mailed to those registered with the USMC. Selected former active-duty Marines and sailors and civilian employees from Camp Pendleton are also included in the survey. The survey and instructions for completing and returning it will be mailed to eligible participants during the summer and fall. A web-based version will be available for those who prefer to answer online.
ATSDR will make survey results available on the Internet and each survey participant will receive a summary of the final report.
