For West Boulevard Elementary’s annual Field Day for kindergartners on May 24, gym teacher Lynn Kime didn’t award any prizes or trophies. Instead, the day focused on rewarding teamwork and cooperation.

During 10-minute stops at activity stations, the kindergartners played hula hoop games, had target practice, completed parachute games, and finished an over-under teamwork relay game.

An easy stop during the activities was the popsicle and drink station, where the students paused to rehydrate.

“For our youngest kids, we make sure that the day is non-competitive. They’re all games that the kindergartners have done during gym class this year, and they find out quickly that the teams that work together are the ones that do the best,” Kimes noted.

The stations were completely manned by parent volunteers, who gave up their time to make a memorable morning for the kids.

Kimes said it’s not an event easily forgotten. “For weeks, I know the kids have been looking outside and itching to get out in that nice weather. It’s really a day that the kids look forward to all year,” Kimes said.

The West gym teacher holds Field Day for every grade at the school over the school days of May 24 and 25.

This year’s Field Day was Kimes’ last – she will be retiring at the end of the school year.
