Poland runner finishes first in festival run

Amanda McNinch from Poland took first overall in the women’s division of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Festival 5-K run June 11 with a time of 21:47. She was followed by Jen Love 22:11 and Amanda Fire 22:47. McNinch’s time in the women’s run set a record in the 30-34 group.

Paul Robinette from Girard ran 17:21 to capture the men’s award with Jason Tatarka second 17:21 and Joshua Reid third 17:42. In the men’s 70 and over group, Lou Alaksin set a new record with a time of 22:15.

Bennett earns Academic All-America

Grove City College junior women’s tennis player Megan Bennett (Poland High) earned Third Team Academic All-America College Division At-Large from Capital One and the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Bennett helped Grove City advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament for the third straight season in 2010 by leading Grove City (13-4 overall) with 13 singles wins.

She won Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles at third singles and first doubles last fall, as the Wolverines won the conference title.

In the classroom, Bennett owns a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average as a finance major.

Junior golf camp is June 20-24

Parto’s Golf Learning will hold a junior golf camp from June 20-24. The camp will run from 10:30 a.m. to noon daily, and cost to enroll is $55 per person.

Also, a junior golf league will be conducted on Monday’s. The matches start at 10 a.m. Cost to join is $20 plus $4.50 weekly greens fees.

YSU bocce event is July 10 at Cassese’s MVR

The Youngstown State Football Alumni Club will hold its bocce tournament on July 10 at Cassese’s MVR.

The tournament starts at 12:30 p.m. with a social hour beginning at 11:30 a.m. A buffet dinner will be served at 4 p.m.
